Addonics, com has a board that allows two compact flash cards to be plugged
in to the IDE cable and replace a 2.5' harddrive. Still not cheap. but for
two 16gb cf cards (280 usd or less) and this 20$ board it could be done. Not
sure about the speed vs. a harddrive. I'm doing two Winxp laptops later this
week... I'll let you know.

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Re: Flash based IDE drives...
I agree. The Solid State Disc (SSD) has significant
advantages over a hard disc as a recording medium
in a field recorder:
--less vulnerable to shock while operating
--more reliable in dusty, humid conditions
--wider range of operating temperature
--unaffected by high altitude/lower air pressure
--minimal power requirement
--generates less heat and no noise during operation
--faster read and write speeds
...(less important to nature recordists)
--faster to start up and shut down
The problem is that the SSD costs about 10 times
as much as a hard disc, and about 50% more than
the equivalent storage in Compactflash cards.
It's possible to purchase a 16GB Compactflash suitable
for use in a field recorder for about $140 today.
Compactflash offers all of the advantages of the SSD,
costs less, and is designed to be removable in the field.
For the moment, I'd suggest using Compactflash, as
the Sound Devices 702 does.
