David a usefull review here of the Fostex unit. I would agree with you on the 
preamp level issue.My mkh 50/30 need the gain cranked up quite high for normal 
levels . I havent yet used it to record low level ambiance but I can see 
preampnoise as a possible issue . I think this is my major gripe with the unit. 
I did also find the headphone level quite low with my HD25s. 
    You obviously dislike the interface and I must admit Im not that keen 
myself . However apart from the stop button on the top of the machine what else 
would you really need to press in a hurry ? record and pause on the front so 
left primed in rec/pause and one button to record one button to pause and then 
when not waiting to record ,stop ( thats how I use it.) To aid weather 
protection and access portabrace have a bag custom made for the FR2-LE :

Admitidly it is expensive but thats just the way it goes. Their gear is very 
well made.
