What typically happens though is the highs "pump" when the lows get loud, o=

the phone amp crackles or cuts out at high volume.

The Sony MDR-55 headphones may be the source of the problem. I wasn't
familiar with the model so I Googled it to find some reviews. $30!
Comments like "weak bass, screechy highs."
Try with a better headphone.
