I just did the same search for the MDR55 and the model that comes up on
the search is not the one I used. Perhaps I forgot a letter in the
model number. The Sony's I have used purchased in 2000 and look more
like the "eggo" models (I *wish* they were only $30).

Anyway, they have always been quiet and well performing, so until I
have a chance to do some more comparative testing (with something other
than ipod earbuds), I still am lead to believe that the headphone amp
noise is generated by the FR2LE - perhaps something more like the
scenerio that Scott laid out in another response. Ill try and record
the sound for those interested.
