I use sealed lead acid. This is the cheap approach.
Want 1/2 the weight and size then go to Nimh, and 1/2 again then Lion.

I went with sealed lead acid because of price and easy charge. You can
build a field charger with just a car cord and a brake light bulb from
any car. The light bulb in series and used as a current limiting
device which is limited to 2.1 amps (26 watts). At home I have an
antique current and voltage regulated supply to charge the way I want.
Hirose connectors bought from digikey for about $12.00 each.
