That's because most of us don't have a mixing board or other such
specialist studio hardware. A plugin is far cheaper and far less mumbo
jumbo than hardware. The usual description of a hardware based solution
is purely academic, more historical than real.

I use the free MDA Image plugin for M/S decoding, and it has not only
adjustments for each mic, (gain & pan), but goes either direction.

If you are "reversing" a non M/S recording you don't have a original and
are reversing to imaginary M/S mics. I'm not sure how you would define
perfect in that case. Or if it's even a concept that matters.
And if you recorded it with a M/S setup and did it properly you have a
original M/S recording in your archive, so no need to reverse it, start
over with a fresh copy of the original.
