Phil,
Now rereading your original post, I see I overlooked you mentioning
measuring 3.5 V on your power adapter.  So I went back and remeasured
mine.  The one I originally measured at 5.1V (model AC-ES305)I think
came with my older MZ-N707 MD (not a HiMD). The one that came with the
HiMD RH10 (AC-ES3010K2) measures 3.4V, and the one that was supplied
supplemental to the MZ-NH700 (AC-E30A) measured 3.3V.

I was making my assumptions about HiMD powering based on an older
power supply, and I appologize for steering anyone wrong.
