The $500 Core Sound states that the self-noise of its Mic2496
portable preamp is -135dBFS. The excellent portable preamps
from builders like Sound Devices, Sonosax, and Aerco claim
self-noise figures around 125 dBu. If I remember correctly,
the dBFS scale is about 20dB different than the dBu. So converted
to dBu, the Core Sound device's self noise would be rated
around 115 dBu.
dB scales aside, the samples I've heard from the Mic2496
sounded good. I think this preamp is quiet enough that it
will add very little audible noise to quiet recordings. Your
mics will probably add more noise than this preamp does.
The Mic2496 has two types of digital output, electrical via
an RCA coax connector, and optical via Toslink connector.
The M-Audio Microtrack 2496 has the RCA type of input, and
the HI-MD minidisc machine has a miniature Toslink optical
input. So you could use either recorder with the Mic2496.
