I rarely listen to a recording without having a real time sonogram display running. This is particularly true if I'm filtering or otherwise processing the sound. One should, of course, realize that all the various displays have their own anomalies often created by the limitations of the math involved. If you are trying to do it just by ear you need to realize just how much your personal sound processing is colored and use some care in trusting it. And of course take into account not only the sound reproduction gear but the environment it's in. I use the running sonogram as a check on what I think I hear. Walt |
