These are all good suggestions. I'll just throw in another FWIW.
When I need to use the third and fourth channels of my 744, I use the
SD-302 as a preamp. It does an excellent job and provides lots of
control. I use the Porta-Brace bags in the field, and find it very
convenient that the bags for the 744 and 302 can be mated to form what
is essentially a single bag. The 302 is powered by a few AA batteries,
so no external battery is required. Of course, it can use an external
battery if that's your preference.
Of course, the main reason I chose this option is that I already had
the 302 when I got the 744. I sometimes also use the 302 to feed my
camcorder.
