Another thought is the Edirol R-4 unit. Though not up to the quality of the
744 it is 1/3 of the price. The music tapers are having the preamps modded
to improve their quality for what they record. I do see that Oade Brothers
sells them. They might offer a upgrade for nature recording??? Below is a
quote from Doug Oade

Hey Now !
The T-MOD MOD (transparency) is what I am planning for the R4. I want one
for myself to do surround nature recordings for playback on less than
reference systems. Reference systems do not need rear speakers to create
sound behind you. You can use internal or external batteries to power it. A=
t
this time we do not have a price set for the MOD but send me an email or
give us a call to discuss it if you like.
Peace...>Doug

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Small MicPre for use with SD 744T

Hello, I'm considering the purchase of a Sound Devices 744T as I'm hoping
to do some some experiments with Multi-Channel recordings. It seems to me
the main drawback of the 744T is only 2 micpres. Can anyone recommend a
small and portable 2 channel micpre that I could use with this recorder?
Size is of the essence as I find that the more gear I carry the less likely
I am to find the great sounds. Basically I would want level control and
phantom power in a portable package. One that seemed to fit the bill is a
Sonosax SX-M2 http://www.sonosax.com/index2.html. Does anybody know of any
others that might work for this application?
