Is that right? My understanding is that an omni 'mid' mic causes the
figure 8 to be the source of the stereo, so in effect, MS stereo with
an omni mid looks like XY at 180 degrees, two mics pointing away from
each other. The amount of the omni signal present varies the apparent
pattern between wide-cardiod, cardiod and super-cardiod, depending on
the ratio of mid to side. So it's not quite Blumlein, which in
effects is still gathering sound from four directions, even though
it's only stereo, right?

A very nice test. The AB certainly had the most depth. The MS tests
were nice, the cardiod version being the most uniform to my ears. I
would pick those two as the favorites.
