Martyn, I don't know whether or not the recorder will ever be what you had hoped for. I have been working with mine and a Sennheiser ME/K6 combo, or one of Klas's EM23 mics and am finally getting some better results. However, if you need back up power you might try this inexpensive option: https://compactimpact.com/shopping/product_info.php?cPath=35&products_id=63 You will load this box with a few AA batteries (I am using Lithium non rechargeable until I can make better rechargeable arrangements) Klas really gave me hope that the recorder was not a complete waste of time, and he was right, as usual.
