Yes, this deserves more investigating.My guess is that its some noise 
from the recorder leaking into the record amp. I didn't turn anything 
on during the tests. I did my usual re-positioning of deck and mic 
cables to detect a change in RF or other noise but when I did this, I 
did not notice the whine.  20 dB is considerable post gain for 
playback level matching with the HiMD.  I'll fire up the MT when its 
gets quiet enough and see if I can recreate it and whether I can hear 
in headphones. It seems slightly left heavy; I wonder if its 
connected to the asymmetrical noise beds readings that were posted?
