Here's a "clock test" comparison of the Sound Devices 722, Rolls
PB-224/Sony NH900 HiMD and A-Audio MicroTrack Recorders/Mic Pres.
This test assumes a "worst case," "all warts showing" scenario where
maximum mic pre gain is used to create maximum bit depth in quiet
locations.
Note that the playback volume of the MicroTrack was boosted +20B in
order to match that of the HiMD recorder. The peak for the loudest
clock tick in the MicroTrack's soundfile was less than 1% while that
of the HiMD recorder was 21% and that of the SD722 was 4.5%. The
sensitivity (output) of the Rode NT1-A's is 25mv/Pa, on the high side
of condenser mics.
The soundtrack of the 2.9mb QuickTime movie is 16/48K, one generation
away from the original (necessary to match playback volume). No
equalization was used. Gain increases were performed simultaneously
with the same plug application. I did not change the bit depth of the
44.1K HiMD file when converting it to 48K because all sound files are
truncated to 16 bits when output for the movie.
You'll probably need to adjust your speaker or headphone volume to
comfortable listening level before trying to evaluate the results.
