Cool - can I sit next to you at dinner? I'm a vegetarian, but I won't mind if
you eat meat, so long as you don't mind that I don't.

derek holzer <> wrote:Hi all,

I'm a newbie on this particular list, but a veteran of several lists that
cross boundaries of arts, science and technology in general, so I hope my
contributions feel "ON" for most of you. On most of these lists, I've
subscribed to the "intelligent dinner party" theory, which simply states
the following:

There's lots of people in this room, and they're all brilliant minds. Some
of them might be geeks, and that's fine, let them talk tech. Some of them
might be artists, and that's fine too, let them debate aesthetics. And
some of them could be trainspotters, but that's cool, they can say what
train where and when to anyone who's interested.

But it's pretty antisocial to leave in a huff if someone else isn't
talking your talk. The "delete" button is useful, but the "send" button is
even more so. So you can always start a new thread if the other ones don't
appeal to you, and if enough of the other party guests talk your talk too,
then the mood shifts and you've got a whole new conversation. And it's one
that benefits from lots of different angles.

Respectfully,
d.
