Since I've owned it I've not been out in the field much but I can tell
you... The mic inputs are... are... Well, not good. They overload if the
volume gets loud at all. I've used it with a MP2 preamp as a front end (int=
o
line in) and it seemed fine but I believe without the MP2 my parabola in
directly would be able to overload the mic inputs easily. It records only a=
t
44.1,48 / 16 bits so the levels are critical. It is sweet on paper...
However I think it is a "not ready for prime time device" as it sits. It
would be fine for the dictation, electronic news gathering crowd. Oade
Brothers are going to offer the PMD 660 with a rebuilt (read upgraded) mic
section and then it might be fine. As it sit right now I'm going to sell
this one on ebay to raise money for a Sound Devices 722.

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Marantz PMD660 question
We're finally getting there, folks. Anyone had any hands-on field
experience with the Marantz PMD660? All flash cards. No moving parts.
$500USD. XLR inputs. Now all we need is one with multi-gig flash
tech in series so that we can record 24/96.
