Mic choice definitely extenuates the preamp. I have been using the shure 1=
83's in a binaural set up and get a nice sound even in quiet places, but I =
also have not been thrilled with all the results. When I bought an aquaria=
n hydrophone the H2, it was terrible.

I am looking at finding a single point mic like the Rode NT4 or the Shure V=
P88. Has anyone tried the Shure VP88 with the Marantz 670? I wonder how i=
t would fair?

BTW: The Oade brothers only offer the modification to units they sell. I b=
ought mine somewhere else thinking that down the line I might be able send =
them mine, but no such luck.

Thanks,

Toby

Actually they just released the 671 which is a 24/96 version of the=20
670, both of which are larger than the 660. But supposedly the 671 has=20
much improved mic preamps over the 670, and also 24 bit is a nice=20
addition.

We took a 670 to Michigan when we recorded the steam train for Polar=20
Express, and let it run capturing a dynamic mic tapes near the smoke=20
stack, it worked well. I don't think the preamps are up to snuff for=20
quiet stuff, pretty noisy and bland sounding. But if the 671's are that =

much improved, then it's a heck of a bargain for a recorder.

My 722 is great, but not worth three times the money. Although it's=20
nice to be able to record 40 hours of material, it's a bit overkill. A=20
4 gig flash card holds plenty.

Street price seems to be about $850 for the 671.
