OK - a couple of quick tests:
I tried the 183s with the Sony PCM-M1 and they were also very
low-headroom, distoring with slightly elevated speaking voice, mics
mounted on my head. I measured the P-I-P voltages as follows:
Sony PCM-M1, loaded w/ 183s: 1.49v
Sony PCM-M1, unloaded: 2.01v
Sony MZ-R37, loaded w/ 183s: 1.83v
Sony MZ-R37, unloaded: 2.44v
Powering the 183s via the phantom adapters (the phantom-only ones,
NOT the phantom/battery ones) offers much more headroom - the mics
perform as expected, not distorting. The connectors I have don't
offer an easy way to test the voltages with those adapters.
I'll be getting a PIP powering box. Would love to find a good one w/
bass rolloff if there is such a thing. Anybody have experience with
such?
