I guess I have not posted one of my projects here for a while, so:
For those interested in an entry level stereo mic for Minidisc
recorders, here is a do it yourself with a cost of about $30.00 US.
Stereo, fairly low noise level, fairly high sensitivity.
Design is based on the Panasonic WM-61A capsules.
Three capsules are soldered in parallel per each channel and sewn to
the sides of a wide brim hat. Having three capsules in parallel
drops the microphone self noise by 4.5 db and triples the
sensitivity. Plug in power from a minidisc is good enough to drive
all 6 elements. Self noise about 27.5 db. No capacitors, resisters,
or batteries needed when powered by a Minidisc recorder with "plug
in power".
Notes.
Use the thinest wire you can find to solder the mic elements in
parallel. As this is a very small capsule you do have to be good
with a soldering iron for this project. I used wire wrap wire and
the cable is the small gauge mic cable used to suspend lav mics from
church ceilings and the like.
After soldering use 5 min. epoxy to seal the wiring on the backs of
the mics and to the cable.
Mics were sewn in a verticle arrangement to minimize any possible
phase problems.
A foam windscreen was cut in half and adhesive was used to attach it
to the hat.
