Of course, I could use my SoundDevices MP-2, but that would be a hassle for
sure.

That said, in normal outdoor situations when doing parabolic recording, it
is extremely difficult to get species recordings with S/N much better than
50-55 db. Thus the internal preamps might do the trick just fine, as long a=
s
one doesn't record at low levels (the object being to get the background
ambience to be well above the noise floor of the preamps).

So maybe it would do just fine in most situations, and certainly as a backu=
p
recorder. However, if I were to do my Sennheiser/SASS sounscape recording,
I'd most certainly insert my MP-2 preamp and use line-in.

The Marantz is a really good deal, considering all it's features.
