In fact, this is the only way to do it properly, since other factors such
as pre-amp, A/D, etc, can also affect the sound. Using two different mics
with the same pre-amp/mixer and A/D is really the only way to tell the
true characteristics of a mic. Although as you point out you also could
run into problems when you use microphones that are designed for a
specific task and use them in some other way.
