Just as a point of reference.

Besides a recordist I'm also a Web developer. I design Webs for 800 x
600 screens and users of 28Bps modems. I believe the majority of users
fall into this category.

Bernie,

How about leaving both options up - *.wav and *.mp3

Good Show

Before you think we are dinosaurs, the majority of internet users
connect via a regular modem. It's easy to focus on the small group with
high speed connections, most high speed connections are business.
Particularly if aiming at individuals modems are still very, very
common. Even if they have it available, the higher price keeps many off
the high speed stuff.

I'm not as bad off as you as far as downloading the mp3's from your
site. But I hardly get full speed out of the 56k modem.

What I do for my site is do a lot of listening. I run up the mp3's at
various settings and listen. I keep getting the size smaller until I
don't like what I'm getting and then move back up a little until I
identify the minimum size that's ok. Better than trying a rote rule, how
much you can compress varies with each sample.

I'm also very tight on how long my clips are. I pack a lot into a short
time. Easier to do with ID clips than listening ones.

For any site concerned with selling product the faster your user can get
things the more likely the sale. People are extremely impatient these
days. Do note that anyone who's that deep in your site is probably
partially hooked, which gives you more time to give them the sample.
