Was this guru a PC person by any chance? Or a recently converted one? PC
folks have thinking flaws when they approach macs. Macs are not PC's and
if you try and apply your PC learning to one it will buck and snort and
throw you off. Forget what you learned about using PC's and the learning
curve will be much, much shorter. Even then, most converted PC folks
never seem to get as effective at a mac as original mac folks.
Peak is a snap to install and learn, except for their awkward copy
protection on the original mac os. This required you to send them a set
of nonsense words it would spit out and they would send you a response.
And the software would be serialized to the hard disk it was on when you
entered that. I hate that system and lost no opportunity to tell them
so. OS X broke all that, so it's a lot easier there.
As I noted, I used Deck briefly, it's also easy to install, and
reasonably easy to learn. I never got into production work or mixing
with it, so can't comment on how easy it would be in the long run.
Too bad I'm not closer, I'd be happy to set it up for you. And help you
get going using it.
Walt
