Speaking of computer languages, our tech guru came by last night to
set up our new BIAS (Deck/Peak) software. It became quickly clear
that the learning curve will be something like the time it'll take
Mars to make the next pass at the Earth. So much for Macs, eh, Marty?

I've actually done this route several times before on horseback,
foot, jeep and plane, having worked with the Nez Perc=E9 since the late
60s on various projects. It's an extraordinary journey. If Joseph's a
hero, know that I have in our archive five of the known recordings of
him singing and drumming (done bet. 1899 and 1904) that we salvaged
from an obscure collection of wax cylinders about six years ago. And
I have a copy of his last speech given at Carlisle Indian School
(Pennsylvania) for the commencement of Elizabeth Wilson, whom I
recorded in 1971 when she was 91 years old. (Some of those stories
can be heard on a cassette tape titled, Nez Perc=E9 Stories, and can be
purchased through Drumbeat & Indian Arts, Scottsdale
http://www.drumbeatindianarts.com, or 1-800-895-4859.
