Hi all,
I was surfing the internet (google-ing all the way), and was
wondering about something; currently my setup is a consumer portable
minidiscrecorder, the Sony MZ-R55.
I try to have the best signalpath available, therefor I would like to
skip the internal preamp of the Sony.
What I do not - and most likely never will - use is plug-in-power /
phantom power delivered by the recorder.
What I don't want to do (yet) is buy a pro machine like the Portadisc.
In my search for suitable preamps two machines stuck in my mind;
1 - the SoundDevices MP2
(http://www.sounddevices.com/products/mp2master.htm)
Price is about 625 US dollars. (at micsupply dot com)
It does have options that I currently do not want; phantompower, MS-
decoding. However, it's 'Unclippable' inputs and low freq filters are
probably very usefull to me.
2 - the Denecke AD20
(http://www.core-sound.com/inbox.html) this URL gives the most info
on this machine, official site: (http://www.denecke.com/prod04.htm)
Price is about 310 US dollars.
It has a built in AD converter that can be connected to both the
coaxial and optical output. I would be using it's optical output
connected to the optical input of the MZ-R55.
It has only 2 controls; left and right volume, no metering.
Which to buy?
I would like to know if anyone can give me advice on how the preamps
sound; do they color, is the self-noise audible at 'normal' gain
settings?
IF the AD20 would be comparable, soundwise, to the MP2. Then the AD20
would have some major advantages; lower price, digital out, less
settings to worry about.
So my big question is; how good is the AD20 compared to the MP2.
Regards, Evert
