No. The UA-3 acts as an audio input and
output device without any help from another
sound card. But you can use a separate sound
card for playback if you wish. Use the
"Audio" tab in the Windows control panel
called "Sounds and Multimedia" to specify the
sound input and output devices.
To monitor the input while recording, the UA-3
routes input sound through the analog RCA line output
jacks for connection to speakers, or through
the headphone out jack. A volume control is
provided.
One more point about the UA-3 (or UA-3D). Since
it draws its power through the USB cable, try
to plug it directly into a USB port on the
computer rather than into an external USB hub.
Because external hubs are used to share USB
ports among several devices, it's possible that
the UA-3 won't receive a steady supply of
current when the other devices swing into action.
