According to Intel, when I asked, both in and out are to be transferred
to the USB device together and they implied it was done at the level of
the chipset. I did not go into details with them to verify this. A
company licensing the USB in their machine or software would be expected
to conform to spec even if it's done in software.
Since this was a dumb idea and probably brought lots of flack, it's
possible the spec has been revised. But, since this was a universal
problem I'd not assume without testing that any particular computer was
going to allow splitting the two. One would certainly hope, as I did at
the time, that it was something transitional.
I think we have probably beaten this to death now.
