I think you have hit on part of what you say. The more recent Sony
minidisc recorders have been less suitable for our purposes. Recording
is becoming more and more secondary in them. That's one of the reasons
why I never upgraded from the MZ-R30 until I went with the Portadisc.
I'd look at each year's crop and they did not stack up to the MZ-R30.
Going smaller was not a advantage.

The MZ-R30 I used did not have any of the problems you mention. Though,
of course you did have to set the recording level in pause, which I
never found to be a problem. It had switchable mic attenuation as well.

Noise from cable movement was only a problem in that it would transmit
through to the Telinga, not the connector. Most common is that the cable
would tick against the reflector if I was not careful. I've used quite a
few brands of mini plugs with it. I do prefer gold plated plugs, which
may have something to do with why I've not seen the scratchy problem.

I, on quite a few occasions would end up yanking the minidisc by the
telinga cable, including dropping it that way a couple times. It's easy
to get tangled in cord at night. No damage from the plug. I prefer the
angled plug as it's less likely to pull out. Of course with the
Portadisc adapter I made, there's little danger to the machine. The plug
would pull off first.
