The ACT only survives by virtue of the income generated from housing
development. The Bush Capital was doomed when self-government was
introduced.
Something else that concerns me is the rate of attrition of mature
trees within the city be they native or exotic. With every storm
that passes a tree somewhere loses a branch and the next day I hear
the inevitable clatter of its removal. Has it become too easy to
remove landscape trees?
Additionally, there seems to be a close correlation between building
work and the death of adjacent mature Eucalypts despite the cute
little fences they are provided with for protection.
Perhaps we are literally heading towards being a bush rather than a
tree capital.
