The yellow tufted honeyeater was still at the gallery today between 11.00 and 12.00. It was hanging around the statue 'Penelope' feeding off lerps and occasionally having disputes with white plumed HE.

Thanks for Benj for bringing to my attention my misreading of Steve’s posting. White-plumed was the far the most abundant and vocal species but White-naped were present.

I combined a lunchtime run around the lake with birdwatching at the National Gallery. I had great and prolonged views of the Yellow-tufted Honeyeater feeding on lerps above the path that leads from the back of the gallery down to the lake. Interesting to read Steve’s comments, as while all other honeyeaters were there, the White-naped was the far the most abundant and vocal species.

Thanks to Marnix to alerting us to this beautiful bird.

Cheers

Alastair

All honeyeaters except White-naped still present lunch time today, also 2 Little Corellas flying over. The Yellow-tufted put in a brief appearance, it seems to have cheered up a bit since Benj saw it yesterday

cheers

Steve

The yellow-tufted honeyeater was still there at 3:30, it was almost the first bird I saw, because it was feeling quite low, only 3-4m. It wasnt calling. Others as per Marnixs email.

There are currently at least 7 species of honeyeater at the Australian National Gallery gardens. Including among them today a single Yellow-tufted Honeyeater. It called occasionally with its single coarse 'tcheek'.
The bird seemed to be hanging around with all the other honeyeaters in the brittle gums surrounding the small patch of open grass between the gallery building and the lake. It was feeding on aerial insects and gleaning them from leaves while I watched between 1.30 and 2pm. At least one gum was starting to flower, but it was jealously guarded by Red Wattlebirds.
Also present Eastern Spinebill, Fuscous Honeyeater (at least 3), White-naped Honeyeater, Yellow-faced Honeyeater and the resident White-plumed Honeyeaters including, as Benj's email mentioned, at least 2 begging juveniles.

Cheers
