Sitting here in Wellington (NZ, not NSW) with mainly Chaffinches and Blackbirds
to admire, and trying to recall the number of times I've observed YTHEs in
Canberra, I would say the species (YTHE) is 'occasional' in Canberra - but that
of course is based on my personal observations in the localities that I tended
to visit on a regular basis (Newline, Campbell Park, etc). When birds turn up
in places that are not regularly frequented by COG members, they may easily not
get reported, unless they hang around for some time, like the Lewin's Rail in
C'wealth Park or the G-C Babbler on Duntroon Golf Course. I think Marnix was
the first to report the YTHE at the NGA about 4 days ago. Yesterday, thinking
I'd be a bit smart, I emailed a friend who takes a walk and birdwatches at
lunchtimes most days around the Gallery/Lake (and who is not a member of this
list or COG as far as I know) to ask if he had seen the YTHE. Apparently he
had seen it every day for the last three weeks, as !
well as
the Fuscous and others in the "explosion" of honeyeaters in the Gallery gardens
over the last few weeks.
Regards
Frank
