Hi,
My uncle (Peter, not Michael) gave me a book for Christmas called Birds of
Western Africa by Nik Borrow and Ron Demey (Princeton Field Guides). Not a bad
guide that he bought on Amazon. Maps are on seperate pages though which I don't
like.
Cheers,

I'll 'third' that recommendation. We used "The South Africa Bird
Finder" to pretty well sort out where to go on a month in South Africa
and a couple of weeks in Namibia. It's _incredibly_ helpful. We ended
up visiting lots of less-famous reserves where we had a wonderful
time. The book comes with a big overview map of the area with all of
the sites noted. As it turns out, this is a really helpful planning
tool. Even still, it's hard to get a handle on the scale down there.
South Africa is *big* and full of interesting spots.
If you're going to be concentrating on specific areas, there are
additional site-finding books. Specifically, Origins publishes two
excellent books for Kruger and there's a recent book for Gauteng.
South African birders are as passionate and dedicated a lot as you
could hope for - the amount of information available is pretty
staggering...and welcome.
There's also a great mailing list like Birding-Aus. I subscribed long
before we visited and held off on my tourist-like questions until I
had pretty specific questions. At that point, I received an
unbelievable level of support from the locals.
