Alan,
Moulds, in his book "Australian Cicadas", mentions that the life cycle
of some species being 7 years and the North American "periodic" cicada
species do have life cycles of 13 and 17 years. Not all cicadas are
periodic and can be found in all years, such as the "6 o'clock" cicada

though it does only refer to US species.
