Of course "tickable" means different things to different people, from rabid
twitcher to purist, but I guess that for most Aussie birders inclusion on
Christidis & Boles 2008 list = tickable.
C&B's argument for inclusion of Barbary Dove included "Small populations have
been recorded from localities in several states (Higgins and Davies 1996;
Barrett et al. 2003). Birds in the Alice Springs area have recently been
recorded breeding. This dove is included on the list as an introduced species."
They go on to acknowledge that Barbary Dove is a long-domesticated form of
African Collared Dove that does not technically warrant a distinct specific
name.
So, I'd tick it here, or in New Zealand where there are plenty, as a race of
the original form, notwithstanding there is a lot more satisfaction to be
gained from seeing the original in its original range.
It cuts both ways - I've enjoyed watching pure Rock Doves living on sea-cliffs
in NW Europe, having already seen them in cities around the world - but it
wasn't a tick!
