I accompanied some friends on a cruise of the Hunter Estuary at Newcastle a
couple of years ago. As we drifted along past the Kooragang Dykes the
commentator/captain of the tour boat made a point of explaining the
importance of the area for birds, citing Ramsar etc. Then someone asked him
about "those black and white birds with the red legs and long red beak." He
assured the lady that they were "Mexican Plovers". I never got the chance to
ask him if he had ever seen any Pied Oystercatchers in the area!
