Blackbirds have certainly been in Pt Pirie near the Southern Flinders ranges
for many years. Don't know if these are expansions north from Adelaide or
from the east.

Graham,

Steve R and I saw a Blackbird at Aroona Dam, near Leigh Creek SA, in 2000.
This was the year that Lake Eyre filled and hundreds of people (ourselves
included) travelled out there to see the goings on. The last thing we
expected to see was a Blackbird! So it's interesting that Anthea mentioned
the original expansion of Blackbirds coinciding with the earlier filling in
the 70's.

>From my experience, Blackbirds have been resident in Cobar for a few years
now (i've seen them there regularly since my first visit in 1996).

They can't seem to get a hold in the Hunter Region, with only scattered
records in a handfull of areas, including suburban Newcastle.

Hi Graham,
The furthest west I can give you is the Flinders Ranges (SA) in
1991. All the creeks were nearly dry so I don't think a dry area would
worry a Blackbird. They are in plaque proportions in Devonport.

But oh how things have changed, and I shouldn't have been too surprised.
Last year I saw some in Ivanhoe, central NSW. This is the last place I
would have expected to see them, very dry. Does anyone have record for
this species further west? Or does anyone know if the birds dispersed
during a wet season or is it just a slow expansion.

Thanks
Graham Turner
