David Mitford has advised me that he saw a male Little Bittern at about 6 pm this evening at the East Lakes Golf Course in Sydney. It was at the southern end of the pond closest to Martin and Donaldson Streets Pagewood. It was seen on the reed bed edge visible from the causeway here. This is the same pond where the Yellow Wagtail was seen a few years ago and where these and Brown Bitterns have also turned up. Though Little Bitterns probably turn up in these places each year, there appears to be a coincidence that they are more often seen during the drought years in Sydney and I would not be surprised if a few more of these stunning birds will be reported over the next few months.
