Hi birders,
Elephants are endangered but probably not that
endangered enough to justify spending AUD14 million
for that captive breeding program. Protecting their
habitat is probably more cost effective(a fraction of
AUD14million would mean alot in other developing
countries) and will benefit not only the elephants but
also other animals and plants living in the area.
Some failures in capture breeding without tackling the
real problem faced (i.e. habitat deterioration) have
further threatened the very species' own survival.
Example: Sumatran Rhinocerous
There are still some good examples where captive
breeding came at right time. California Condor, Guam
Rail, Hawaiian Crow.
Questions - are current elephants in Australia's zoo
collection breeding well and increasing in numbers? Is
YES then there is no need to import more. Is NO then
this may not convince that we are the successful
breeding centre of endangered Asian elephants.
Cheers,
Tun Pin ONG
