Hi all,
I can add that Simon Mustoe et al. obtained yet another sighting of a
Buff-breasted Button-quail on Monday 10th January when following up at a site
found by Michael Hunter and Richard Baxter near Mt Malloy Nth QLD. To put these
sightings in some sort of context local birders in the Atherton region are
aware of just one sighting (of two birds together) in 2004 and if I recall
correctly don't know of any sightings in 2003.
Except in very occasional boom years (nice pun?) when small numbers are found
in very specific habitat to the west of the Wet Tropics this species is almost
impossible to find. In fact, after the Night Parrot this may be the hardest
Australian resident bird to find.
Cheers
Rohan
