Hello all,
I wouldn't get too concerned about this website. It was probably put
together by someone who just used a field guide to come up with the
Australian quail and had no idea of their unavailability or otherwise,
apart form the commonly kept species they already stocked. Chances are that
they don't know what a Buff-breasted Buttonquail is.
I kept and bred a number of species of buttonquail in the late 80's early
90's. Painteds, Littles and Black-breasteds were all fairly commonly held.
Red-chesteds and Red-backeds were a little rarer in captivity but there
were still quite a few people keeping these species as well. They aren't
hard to breed in captivity. They aren't as colourful as parrots and finches
so as a general rule they were less popular. In my opinion poaching of
quail is VERY unlikely to be a serious threat to any of Australia's quail
or buttonquail.

Hi Graham,
How do those people get away with it? Can you get licences
for the rarities or do they claim to breed them in captivity?
Cheers
