We seem to be getting into a total state of confusion.
Firstly, like Steve Clark, when I visited LHI in 1986, I did not see a
Buff-banded Rail. I've emailed Ian Hutton to ascertain just when they
started to become common.
Secondly, Spotted Harrier has never been recorded there. It is the Swamp
Harrier which occurs there and on Norfolk Island and is said to come from
NZ.
Thirdly, White-chested White-eye was never on LHI. It was on Norfolk Island.
In visits to that island in 1992 & 1998 neither I nor my companions found it
in spite of diligent searches. Neither did Brian Bell find it in an extended
special survey around 1990(?) so it was declared extinct. Nevertheless a
world birder 'found' it in a visit of less than one day, one or some claim
to have seen it on the BOCA trip there, and some locals claim to see it
occasionally. None of these claims have been substantiated. Since I haven't
seen it, I remain sceptical!!!!
