Aaaarrgghhh!, yes of course, my error. The White-chested White-eye was a
Norfolk endemic before extinction, not a Lord Howe, sorry about that.
That's what I get for going to both places one straight after the other.
Ok, switch Norfolk for Lord Howe in my ref to this species.

The point I was trying to make with the white-eye is extinct or not
White-chested White-eye is a NORFOLK ISLAND endemic. It has never been
recorded from Lord Howe Island.
Slender billed White-eye used to occur on both LHI and NI but is now extinct
on LHI and considered Endangered because of continuing declines on NI even
though it remains easy to find there.

One other LHI ( insert Norfolk here) bird being the subject of some debate
as to whether it still
exists or not is the White-chested White-eye. Islanders varied in their
beliefs about this species, some saying it has been extinct for some years
whilst one claimed it had been seen only a couple of months ago. Of course
we ( about ten experienced mainland birders) searched extensively over 5
days for this pesky bird without success and concluded that the "extinct"
advocates had to be right. Our hopes were not high.
