Not only am I shocked about the bird collecting mentioned in Tony's message
but in a way, embarrassed too. Regulars to birding-aus will no doubt be
well aware of my intense, sometimes bordering on obsessional, dislike of
wildlife being killed by duck shooters, so it will not be a surprise to
anyone that I am dismayed and saddened about the apparent act of shooting
birds for museum displays - an occurrence I believed only took place in
times long gone. It was a similar story that stuck with me after doing a
beginner birder's course years ago. The example given was about how
researchers once wanted to know whether it was the male or female Tawny
frogmouth that did the nest sitting. So they shot one off its nest to find
out. I was assured that times had long since changed for the better from
those dim, dark days. And now it would appear that this just isn't so.
