I add a small tribute to that great birder. I visited Barham 4 days a
year for four years, 35 or so years ago, and had the good fortune, as
a known mad birder, to be introduced to Peter, another one, but of
infinitely higher stature. Those were the days of the giants, John
Hobbs, Arnie McGill, Keith Hindwood and many others. Peter was part of
that august assembly. I think I actually met him once in the following
years, and that in Kakadu, but we were able to send messages to each
other through intermediaries in that time.
I visited his home once. On the kitchen table he had a baby
bath containing baby tortoises, orphaned, which he reared,
successfully, and under a tank -stand, in a wire enclosure, I met, in
absolute darkness, mother carpet snake brooding a pile of eggs. She
accepted a mouse or two, which Peter bred for her, with dignity.
I remember Peter with pleasure.
