I am in the Sutherland Shire, Sydney & have only encountered other birders on a handful of occasions in the Royal NP, and at Kurnell & Maroubra.

I have recently spent about 12 months in the UK where the story is much different of course. A Saturday afternoon walk on a RSPB reserve near London might turn up 50 or so birders, & that was without even a rarity to draw them - (I must say though it was hard to raise a smile or conversation out of most of them!!) I heard of a story where a species of Nuthatch (Red-breasted from memory), a vagrant in Britain turned up in Norfolk & within 1 day of notification via the twitchers paging network, around 500 mad birders were trudging through a small patch of woods looking for the bird!!
