If you think southern papers get it wrong spare a thought for us up here
in the north!

Kate Fischer the model was the presenter on one of the sewage pond
soirees I organised. That she wore an evening dress split to the hip and
gumboots, and arrived in a stretch limousine caused some comment when the
show reached national television. She thought we were all mad, but when
she asked me whether catching Ross River virus might help her 'lose
weight' I really wondered about her too.

David McNicoll also wrote about the soirees in The Bulletin. When some
months later I attended a country and western function with a friend in
South Australia, I was interviewed on stage in front of a crowd of a few
thousand, most of whom seemed to have seen at least one of the shows.
Had the opportunity been there I'm sure many would have jumped at the
chance to know more about their birds.

I've raised the topic of Australian birds with Irene O'Brien who is (I
think) the new head of Communications at the ABC, and last email she told
me she would 'flag' the idea. Another suggestion I've made is something
along the lines of 'Two Fat Ladies' but with Australian women, preferably
one a bush Aboriginal lady, exploring nature.

Presently friends, Drs. Ellen Rudolph and Nicole Duplaix are completing a
book of their travels of Australia for National Geographic in which they
are willing to highlight some of the issues (the book will be mainly of
their photographs interspersed with conversations between a zoologist
and psychologist on issues). If anyone has any interesting research or
concepts they wish to bring to my attention, please contact me.
