Hi all,
Further to the discussion of backyard birds, my morning was enlivened by a
juvenile Brush Cuckoo in our garden at Wavell Heights in Brisbane's northern
suburbs. The area is not especially well treed and, other than Koels and
Channel-billeds, this is the first cuckoo I've ever seen here, and my second
house-list bird in a week (Dollarbird being the other).
The cuckoo was quite small and I was initially fooled into believing it was
a young bronze-cuckoo. However, the plain buff undertail coverts, white tip
to the square-cut tail, strongly barred underparts and overall dark brown
plumage mottled with paler rufous colouration (particularly around the head)
swayed me.
Further to the east in Banyo - an residential/industrial suburb near
Nudgee - at least one pair of Striped Honeyeaters has been present for the
past week. Also of interest are the Scarlet Honeyeaters which still remain,
feeding on late-flowering callistemon (weeping bottlebrush).
Cheers
