Koels are very noisy around my part of Townsville (Garbutt, adjacent to the
airport), with single birds now visiting the garden regularly to take the
fruit from a flowering fig. I often hear koels calling through the night.
I can't comment on whether numbers are higher this year as it's only my
second year at the house. I have noted that the Drongo which had been
around for some months has taken off since the koels moved in. I last
recorded a Drongo in the garden on 11 October though I still see them most
days at the University.
Given that the Drongo is itself a very pugnacious bird, can anyone comment
on whether Drongos and koels tend to avoid each other, given the similar
colouring between the male koel and drongo?
