G'day!
I've been following the discussion of
the foreward in the NHT Journal. This is amazing! I've had a copy for a few
months now - have read all of the articles with pleasure, and with admiration
for the work being done - but had not read the foreword until this
week.
I generally assume that forewords in
such journals are largely political posturing and hardly worth the time taken to
read them. This one, however, does have something to say, and I don't
think the numbers nonsense removes quite all of its
credibility.
The last few paragraphs are pretty good,
in fact. The sale of Telstra is past; some money's always going to be wasted in
projects; better to focus on the positive outcomes of these bird-related
exercises funded through NHT. Improvements to essential bird habitat are
not going to happen without the incentive of funding from some source - and it's
those improvements that count in the long term.
We should be wary of becoming too
pedantic when bird welfare is the really important issue.
